The man allegedly raped a woman and attacked another woman within 45 minutes in Bay Village and Theater District

A Lowell man allegedly raped a woman in Bay Village and attempted to rape a second woman he randomly encountered in the Theater District early last Saturday, Oct. 26, according to court records.

Solomon Wambui, 25, was arraigned Monday in Boston Municipal Court, where he was ordered held without bail under state law by Judge Richard Sinnott at the request of the office of Suffolk District Attorney Kevin R. Hayden. He pleaded not guilty to charges of rape and assault with intent to rape, records show.

According to court records, a 26-year-old woman was walking home in Bay Village around 4:30 a.m. after working late. The woman was on the phone with her mother and was on her way to her home when Wambui reportedly came up behind her on Cortes Street.

“Can you leave?” the woman asked Wambui, according to court records. “ ‘Can I have some personal space?’ ”

Wambui is said to have responded by insisting that the woman “come with me.” I can help you. I can take you home,” prosecutors wrote in court filings.

At that point, Wambui allegedly grabbed the woman by “the front of her neck and then from behind and dragged her to the ground” and raped her, prosecutors wrote.

“The entire attack and rape of the first woman was captured on video,” prosecutors said.

As Wambui fled down Arlington Street, the woman recorded him on her cell phone, called 911 and gave Boston police a description of her attacker. Officers began searching the area and saw a man matching Wambui’s description emerge from Eliot Norton Park on Charles Street South around 5:15 a.m., prosecutors said.

A 47-year-old woman seen next to the suspect told police the man had sexually assaulted her, prosecutors said.

She later told police she was walking along Charles Street South when a man started following her. “She increased her walking pace and he did so as well,” prosecutors wrote.

Wambui allegedly grabbed the woman and put his hand over her mouth, causing her to have trouble breathing because of her asthma, prosecutors wrote.

Wambui allegedly forced her into the grassy area of the park and assaulted her, prosecutors said.

“She cried. She tried to get away from him by twisting and turning her body. The victim tried to scream as much as she could, but with his hand covering her mouth, it was difficult,” prosecutors wrote.

The woman convinced Wambui to stop and walk with her out of the park, prosecutors wrote. “The victim convinced the suspect to leave the park to see if she could get away from him,” prosecutors wrote.

Police searching for the man who raped the woman on Cortes Street saw Wambui, noticed his zipper was open and he was bleeding, prosecutors said. Officers arrested him in connection with both attacks, prosecutors wrote.

“The nature and circumstances of these crimes can only be described as violent, brutal and extremely heinous,” prosecutors wrote. “The only reason he was discovered and ultimately arrested was because he attacked another victim close to the attack on the first victim.”

In court papers, prosecutors said Wambui had no prior domestic violence convictions and was not on probation for a recent conviction of any kind. “The suspect has no criminal record,” prosecutors wrote.

His attorney was not immediately available Friday.

Wambui is due back in court on November 22. He is also being held on $50,000 cash.

His arrest was first reported by the Boston Herald.
