The deaths of children who ate ‘contaminated food’ are being investigated

The children, aged two and six, from Cabhane village in uMzumbe, fell ill on Monday and died the next day.

It is believed this happened after their family ate contaminated food over the weekend.

Another child, 11, and an older woman, 64, were also hospitalized.

The department visited the family this week.

MEC Mbali Shinga says they cannot speculate on the cause of death.

“The children’s mother also suffered from stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhea due to this unknown thing that happened. We will request that as soon as we receive the test results, we notify everyone.

“The worst thing we would want to see is an outbreak because we really don’t know what they have consumed.”
