Proscenium Players, Inc. presents “The Diviners” at the Brewery Arts Center

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – This month, Proscenium Players, Inc. presents. “The Diviners,” written by Jim Leonard Jr., in the “Maizie” Black Box Theater at the Brewery Arts Center (551 W. King Street, Carson City). The show’s director Toni Tomei, along with actors Warren Schader (CC Showers) and Harriet Cummings (Norma Henshaw), stopped by Morning Break to talk about the show.

Synopsis:

When CC Showers, a backslidden preacher, leaves the Kentucky pulpit he inherited from his ancestors and searches for an honest living, he ends up in the small town of Zion, Indiana. He finds a job and a place to lay his head in the home of widowed mechanic Ferris Layman. The locals of Zion welcome Douches with suspicion, curiosity, and ultimately joy – the town has been without a pastor for years, and the towns’ religious women know that Douches has been sent by the Lord to bring the word of God and rebuild the church. Showers rebuffs the city’s attempts to install him in their non-existent pulpit, and turns his attention to the mechanic and his son and daughter. Showers begins to think he can do some good as a friend to Buddy, a wild and innocent young man with a twisted mind and some uncanny skills. His mother’s death by drowning and his own near-death have given Buddy a powerful fear of water, just as a mysterious water affinity gives him powers as a “water witch,” with the ability to locate springs and predict rain. . Showers makes it his mission to calm Buddy’s fears and reintroduce him to water as a friend. The former preacher tries to keep Buddy grounded and heal him with the simple earthly magic of soap and water, but when the townspeople’s hopes get involved, the line between bathing and baptisms becomes blurred and tragedy inevitably strikes. to. This comedic drama features a strong ensemble of multifaceted friends and neighbors, the well-meaning residents of a small town searching for the past and uncertain about the future.
