Harvard, Northwestern failed Jewish students during college campus protests: House report

A new anti-Semitism report led by the Republican Party found that Harvard University declined to call Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack on Israel “violent” and that Northwestern University was considering removing Sabra hummus from campus.

The 365-page report summarized a yearlong investigation by the House Education and Workforce Committee, gathered from more than 400,000 documents from 11 schools across the country, into how they responded to a wave of pro-Palestinian protests in the wake of Hamas October 7. to attack.

According to the report, when drafting a public statement after Oct. 7, senior Harvard University executives omitted the word “violent” to describe the attack after a dean complained that it “sounded like assigning blame.”

They wondered whether to reject a statement by some student groups that Israel was responsible for the violence, but ultimately decided against it.

Northwestern University President Michael Schill, who testified before the committee last spring, expressed openness to removing Sabra hummus from campus to appease protesters.

According to the report, Schill appointed anti-Israel faculty to negotiate with the students who camped outside in protest of the Israeli offensive in Gaza. One of them suggested scrapping the popular hummus brand.

“It is a very sore spot for Palestinians because it is an Israeli hummus brand that has invaded most college campuses,” he said in a text message.

Another suggestion considered, according to the report, was hiring an anti-Zionist rabbi.

However, Northwestern denied ever “seriously” considering boycotting an Israeli company.

Schill also excluded Jewish members from his president’s Advisory Commission on Preventing Anti-Semitism and Hatred, according to the report.

The report also accused several schools of withholding support from Jewish students and found this to be intentional rather than negligent.

The committee’s investigation found that in several cases these failures did not stem simply from ignorance or a lack of prior knowledge, but rather from deliberate decisions by university leaders not to provide the Jewish communities on their campuses with the necessary support needed to ensure make them feel safe to live on. campus or attend classes,” the report said.

The report also found that Harvard President Claudine Gay, who resigned after testifying before the committee about anti-Semitism and plagiarism allegations, had asked the university not to label the phrase “from the river to the sea” as anti-Semitic, from fear that they would then have to discipline students who used it.

In Columbia, the report revealed how executives trying to end the pro-Gaza encampment considered making bigger concessions than they had previously allowed, including proposals to divest from companies “complicit in violating international law” or those “certain categories of weapons” and cooperation with a Palestinian university “where Hamas is active on campus.”

The report also highlighted incidents in which universities refused to punish students, including Columbia, allowing some students to leave without punishment after taking over Hamilton Hall.

In a Dec. 10 board meeting, five days after Gay took the top spot on the committee, she sharply criticized Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., the chairwoman of the House Republican Conference, whose sharp questioning partly led to the resignation of Gay led.

Gay told the board it was difficult to have the university’s “moral core” questioned, “especially by someone who is a propagator of hate” and “supporter of Proudboys.”

The Republican Party-led report concluded that the universities had likely violated Title VI and demanded that universities enforce greater accountability.

“Our investigation has shown that these ‘leaders’ bear responsibility for the chaos that likely violates Title VI and endangers public safety. It is time for the executive branch to enforce the laws and ensure that colleges and universities restore order and ensure that all students have a safe learning environment,” said Rep. Northwestern took issue in a statement with “unfair characterizations of our provost and valued members of our faculty based on isolated and out-of-context communications” in the report.

“The Republican Staff Report remains focused on events discussed at length during the committee hearing last spring, and ignores the hard work our community has done since then to improve our policies and procedures.”
