Elon Musk's new $35 million Austin homes are for children, two of their mothers

Elon Musk, the richest man in the world, has reportedly bought a mansion in Austin for his 11 children, along with adjacent properties for two of his children’s three mothers.

The Tuscan-style complex covers 14,400 square meters. Adjacent to the complex is a six-bedroom mansion that Musk also purchased, according to public records. Combined, the properties totaled approximately $35 million.

The New York Times reports that Musk has told those close to him that he wants his children and two of their mothers on these properties so that his younger children can be close to each other and Musk can more easily spend time with them. Sources close to the Texas billionaire told the Times that the new properties are about a 10-minute walk from the Austin mansion where he usually stays.

According to People magazine, Musk has twelve children with three partners. Only eleven are still alive: Musk’s first child, Nevada Alexander Musk, died in 2002 at ten months old from cot death. Nevada was the child of Musk’s first wife, Canadian writer Justine Wilson. The two were married from 2000 to 2008.

Musk and Wilson had five other children using in vitro fertilization: Vivian Jenna (who changed her name and gender in 2022), Griffin, Kai, Saxon and Damian. Vivian and Griffin are twins born in 2004, and Kai, Saxon and Damian are triplets born in 2006.

Musk then had three children with Claire Boucher, a Canadian musician and producer better known as Grimes. They had a son, X Æ “X” A-Xii, in 2020 and a daughter, Exa Dark Sideræl, in 2021 via surrogate. Techno “Tau” Mechanicus was born in 2022, also via surrogate, but less is known about Musk and Boucher’s third child. The couple never married but dated periodically from 2018 and 2021.

Musk also has three children with Shivon Zilis, a project director for one of Musk’s companies. The two welcomed twins, a son named Strider and a daughter named Azure, in 2021. They were born weeks before Musk and Boucher’s daughter was born. Musk and Zilis’ third child was born early this year, but the baby’s name and gender remain unknown to the public.

Reports indicate that Zilis and her children have already moved into the Austin complex, and Wilson and her children are expected to follow suit.

The relationship between Musk and Grimes became strained last year during a custody battle when Musk allegedly did not let Grimes see her children, NBC News reports.
